With today’s busy lifestyle, laser hair removal can eliminate all the discomfort, time involvement and frustration associated with more traditional methods and give you smooth, soft skin all summer long!
Waxing vs Laser Hair Removal
The debate has been raging for several years now about whether waxing or laser hair removal is the best option for patients seeking smooth, hairless skin all year round.
While waxing has been, and still remains, very popular in the cosmetic industry, laser hair removal is increasingly used by professional skin clinics for patients looking to get rid of any unwanted body hair.
Waxing
Waxing is a semi-permanent way of ridding your body of any unwanted hair. It works by lifting the hair off from the root and results in smooth, flawless skin for approximately 4-6 weeks.
PROS
- Lower short-term costs than laser hair removal
- Quick treatment time
- Can target larger treatment areas in just one hair removal session
CONS
- Results are not permanent - they only last 4-6 weeks
- Painful & may leave your skin red and irritated
- For best results, hair has to be at least 1cm. If any shorter, it can cause an ingrown hair which may lead to infection.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser is an innovative permanent hair removal solution for men and women and works by using a therapeutic heat to destroy your hair follicles ability to grow hair.
At our Kelowna skin clinic, we use the advanced GentleLase laser hair removal system that requires only 4-8 treatments for optimal results.
PROS
- Less painful than other hair removal methods such as electrolysis or waxing.
- Effective in removing hair from large areas such as the back and/or legs
- Lower long-term costs as compared to waxing (only need 4-8 sessions for PERMANENT hair removal results)
CONS
- Higher short-term costs
- Since laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in the skin, it provides more successful results for darker-skinned patients.
- There can be some temporary side effects such as itching and/or swelling or (rare) more serious ones such as infection or skin discoloration.

For our male patients who spend a lot of time dealing with unwanted hair, our customized laser hair removal treatments for men are the ideal option.
Dos & Don'ts of Laser Hair Removal in the Summer
Summertime and body hair are definitely two things that never go together. Traditionally, people have turned to waxing and shaving for quick at-home-treatments but there can be a price to pay such as cuts, razor burns and/or ingrown hairs.
The best alternative? Laser hair removal.
While laser hair removal is a safe and effective treatment for getting rid of any unwanted body hair, there are certain things you should keep in mind if you opt for it during the summer.
1. Tanning
It’s possible to be tanned and still receive laser hair removal treatments. However, it’s best not to, given that if the color of the skin is closer to your hair color, the results are more efficient. If you do wish to tan AFTER your treatment, remember: Stay out of the sun 1 week before and at least 1 week after your laser hair removal. Failing to do so could result in hyperpigmentation, blisters and/or scarring.
2. Swimming
For at least 1-2 days after your laser hair removal, you should avoid the gym, sauna, jacuzzi, ocean and pools. After that period, all water based activities will be safe.
3. Sun Exposure
After your treatment, it’s important to talk to the specialist at your skin clinic about how to protect your skin during the summer. Often, a SPF of 50+ is recommended. This is because, if the treatment area is exposed to sunlight, there will be a risk of hyperpigmentation.
