5 Different Types of Hyperhidrosis & How To Treat Them

Does excessive and uncontrollable sweating make you frustrated and self-conscious? At our Kelowna Skin Clinic, we provide customized Botox treatments for various types of hyperhidrosis to minimize your condition and restore the quality of your life.

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a common condition that affects many Canadians. It is caused by overactive sweat glands and can significantly impact one’s quality of life. Hyperhidrosis may affect the whole body or only certain areas.

If left untreated, hyperhidrosis can severely restrict a patient’s ability to live a quality life - socially, psychologically and physically. Often, many sufferers:

  • Avoid physical contact with other people (e.g. hugging or shaking hands)
  • Find that their daily activities (e.g. driving or using computer) are more difficult
  • Avoid physical activity because it exacerbates their symptoms
  • Become socially withdrawn and self-conscious about their sweating

Types of Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis can affect a particular body part, or the overall body, Palms, feet, underarms and the groin are the most affected areas.

Below are the key types of hyperhidrosis, although it’s important to note that many people can (and often) suffer from excessive sweating in multiple body parts.

General Hyperhidrosis

This is a condition where excessive sweating occurs throughout the body and is not limited to any particular body part.

Palmar Hyperhidrosis

This refers to hyperhidrosis impacting the hands (primarily the palms) and is one of the most common types.

People suffering from palmar hyperhidrosis notice that it affects:

  • Their social interactions
  • Their ability to drive
  • Their professional ability
Plantar Hyperhidrosis

This is the medical term for hyperhidrosis that affects the feet (primarily the soles.) While it’s easier to hide this type of hyperhidrosis with socks, it is still a difficult condition as it makes the feet slippery.

Axillary Hyperhidrosis

This hyperhidrosis is concentrated in the underarm area. Such patients typically show a sweat patch on their shirts/t-shirts and may become self-conscious and nervous in social settings because of this.

Facial Hyperhidrosis

This condition causes excessive sweating on the head and face. It can be the most embarrassing socially, as it’s difficult to hide.

Excessive sweat on the face can often be misconstrued as nervousness, ill-health or exertion and can damage a person’s social lifestyle.

Hyperhidrosis Treatments

If you are one of many Canadians who suffer from hyperhidrosis, there is good news! There are a number of effective treatments, including lifestyle changes and Botox, that can help minimize your symptoms and reduce any discomfort.

Lifestyle changes

When it comes to treating excessive sweating, it’s recommended to start with lifestyle changes including:

  • Wearing loose and/or light clothing
  • Avoiding any hyperhidrosis triggers such as spicy food, alcohol or hot drinks
  • Managing your stress levels
  • Weight loss
  • Using talcum powder to absorb excess sweat
  • Armpit shields may absorb excess sweat and protect your clothes

While such changes may not cure primary hyperhidrosis, they are a very effective way of improving your condition and boosting your confidence.

Botox Treatments

If topical treatments (antiperspirants and medications) and lifestyle changes don’t alleviate your symptoms, then Botox may be recommended as a possible treatment for hyperhidrosis.

Here is what to expect from the procedure:

How Botox Works

Botox is an FDA approved skin treatment for hyperhidrosis and eliminates symptoms by blocking the chemical nerve signals which stimulate sweat glands.

During the treatment, Botox is injected using an ultra-fine needle, preventing sweat from being produced in those areas.

How long is the Botox treatment?

The duration of the treatment depends on the size and location of the treatment area. On average it takes 20 minutes.

When will I see the results?

Botox takes effect quickly and you’ll notice a reduction in sweat within a few days. It may take up to a week for Botox to take full effect.

Are Botox results permanent?

The effects of Botox are long-lasting, but not permanent. Follow up treatments will be required every 6-8 months to maintain great results.
