8 Tips For Keeping Your Skin Moist and Healthy This Winter

That rosy-cheeked glow you get from Canada’s great outdoors can be deceiving - especially during the winter.

The cold outdoor air, combined with moisture-zapping hot indoor air, can wreak havoc on your appearance and may lead to:

  • Dry and brittle looking skin
  • Itching and irritated skin
  • Premature aging
  • Eczema or acne flare-ups

During the winter, your skin will become more dry, chapped, and cracked. The good news? There are a number of practical steps you can take to effectively protect your appearance during the colder months.

7 Simple Ways to Protect Your Skin in Winter

Humidify. Run a humidifier where you spend the most time (office, home, bedroom) to keep the air, and your skin, hydrated.

Cool it off. Turn down the thermostat and avoid hot showers and baths to alleviate the dryness.

Stay protected. Sunscreen isn’t for summertime only. While the sun’s rays may be less intense in winter, they’re still damaging your skin. Okanagan Skin Care’s EltaMD sunscreen prevents sun damage and provides serious UVA and UVB protection.

Keep it dry. This may sound contradictory as we started with keeping it humid, but if you are out in the frigid weather with damp skin, it will chap.

Careful with exfoliating. While it may feel great to scrub off all that dead, dry skin, be gentle. Your skin has already taken a beating from the cold air and dryness. Okanagan’s Diamond Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliation therapy that leads to a more vibrant, supple and fresh appearance.

Eat right and stay hydrated. Moisturize from the inside out with foods containing omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids like fish oil, salmon, nuts/seeds, avocados and flaxseed oil . And yes, you need 2 litres (or 8 glasses) of water a day to keep your skin cells hydrated.

Get a professional skin treatment. Winter is a great time for a laser skin treatment or chemical peel as there is less concern about sun exposure causing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. (Winter is also a good time to tackle unwanted hair. ).
