Waxing vs Laser Hair Removal: How to Determine Which is Right for You

When it comes to removing unwanted hair, whether it’s on your arms, legs, back, or any other part of your body, there are many options to choose from. However, two of the most popular include waxing and laser hair removal.

While a consultation with your laser hair removal specialist is the best way to determine which option is right for you, here are some things you should know about waxing vs laser hair removal:

Waxing

Waxing is a conventional method of hair removal and involves using a sticky, gel-like wax (that is often heated). This will be applied to your skin, after which a strip is used to pull out the wax full of hair. This pulls the hair deep down from its roots and requires repeat sessions every 4-6 weeks.

Here are some facts about waxing you need to know:

  • Waxing removes your hair from the roots, leaving you hair-free typically for the next 3-6 weeks. The longevity of the results depends on your hair type.
  • Waxing can be painful, especially if you don’t use quality wax. However, new, hard waxes are available for areas such as the underarms and bikini parts. These are known to cause less pain.
  • Waxing is a lifetime process. You will typically require 12-24 sessions a year, which will raise your long-term costs.
  • You need to let your hair grow out in-between your waxing sessions. This means that you won’t always be able to wear shorts/dresses or sleeveless shirts unless you decide to shave these areas.
  • If the wax is overheated, it can cause skin burns, bruising, and tears. It’s always best to get a professional to do your waxing.

FINDING THE RIGHT HAIR REMOVAL STYLE FOR YOUR BIKINI AREA

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is an innovative technology that uses light energy and heat formation to destroy your hair follicles. This means that the hair cannot grow back and it is considered a permanent form of hair removal.

Here are some facts about laser hair removal that you should know:

  • The short-term costs of laser hair removal are higher than waxing. However, because you only need 4-6 treatments before enjoying permanent results, laser hair removal can drastically decrease your long-term hair removal costs.
  • People of all skin colours can safely have laser hair removal. However, if you have darker skin, make sure your skin care specialist has the necessary experience to perform the treatment on you.
  • Laser hair removal doesn’t work on blonde, white, grey, or red hair. This is because the lasers cannot effectively target light-coloured hair.
  • There is no downtime associated with laser hair removal. You can safely return to your daily activities immediately after the treatment.
  • If you have a tan, you must wait for it to fade completely before undergoing a laser hair removal treatment.
  • You’ll need to keep the treated area out of the sun for at least one week to ensure the safest and best results.
