The Cosmetic And Medical Uses Of BOTOX®

When we hear of BOTOX®, we most commonly associate it with being a treatment for fine lines and wrinkles on the face. But BOTOX® is actually used for a variety of medical treatments. This anti-wrinkle treatment is among one of the most popular cosmetic treatments out there. BOTOX® is a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes the muscle it is injected into to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines as well as to address health concerns such as migraines, hyperhidrosis, and more. The treatment must be professionally administered regardless if its use is for medical or cosmetic purposes.  This article will go over some of the most common cosmetic and medical uses for BOTOX®.

Medical Uses Of BOTOX®

BOTOX® Can Correct Strabismus
Strabismus is most commonly referred to as crossed eyes and can be corrected with BOTOX®. One of the earliest uses of BOTOX® was actually for treating eye disorders and not for cosmetic purposes. The treatment corrects the eye position so that both eyes are turned towards the direction the person is looking at. In small doses, BOTOX® can be safely used to treat strabismus in children.

BOTOX® Is A Treatment For Migraines
A migraine is not only reccuring, it is also incapacitating. Those who suffer from migraines know the struggles and pain that they can cause. They can be so debilitating that they can make you unable to complete work or even get out of bed. Small doses of BOTOX® can help reduce the frequency of chronic migraine headaches. It is an FDA-approved treatment and is highly effective allowing many patients to get back to their regular lives without having to suffer from recurring migraines.

BOTOX® For Treating Excessive Sweating

Those who suffer from hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweating even on days when it is not hot. Regular antiperspirants do not work to treat hyperhidrosis and many people who suffer from the condition must seek professional medical help. BOTOX® injections block the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which binds to your sweat glands to signal the release of sweat. The overactive sweat glands are essentially paralyzed therefore reducing the amount of sweat in that specific area.

Cosmetic Uses Of  BOTOX®

BOTOX® is typically used in the facial area to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines specifically in the eye and forehead area. It can also be used for lip lines and corners of the mouth and the neck. Other than the more common aging effects such as wrinkles, BOTOX® is also used to effectively address sagging eyelids and brows to lift them and give the appearance of a youthful, refreshed look. More recently, younger individuals are also using BOTOX® as a preventative measure to stop the aging process in its tracks. Overall, you will enjoy a smoother, more youthful look anytime you use BOTOX®.

When BOTOX® is injected, it blocks certain nerve signals that cause the facial muscles to contract. Instead of contracting, the muscles then relax, smoothing out the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The effects of BOTOX® typically last for 3-6 months depending on each individual as well as where it is injected.
