Simple Tips For Managing Your Acne At Home

Are you suffering from acne? At our Kelowna skin care centre, we offer a wide range of customized acne treatments and skin care products to help you achieve the clear and beautiful complexion you’ve always wanted.

Acne is commonly thought of as a problem of adolescence, but the truth is that it can occur in people of all ages. Whether it is adolescent acne or adult/post-adolescent acne, the causes are the same, and include:

  • Excess oil production
  • Pores becoming clogged by ‘sticky’ sin cells
  • Bacteria and inflammation
  • Hormones, stress, and the menstrual cycle in women
  • Diet, which can influence inflammation throughout the body
  • Certain hair products, skin care products, and makeup which can clog pores

Whatever the cause, acne is a skin condition that can be difficult to deal with, and it may impact a patient’s self-esteem and quality of life. The good news? A customized acne treatment created by one of our Kelowna skin care specialists can help clear up your complexion.

Top Skin Care Tips For Managing Your Acne At Home

One of the best ways to manage your acne and achieve a clearer complexion is by opting for a customized acne treatment created by a skin specialist. However, together with this, you can also take some steps at home to help manage your acne. This includes:

  1. Washing your face twice a day and after sweating. Perspiration, especially when wearing a helmet or a hat, can exacerbate your acne. Make sure to wash your skin at least twice a day, and as soon as possible after sweating.

  2. Be gentle with your skin. Make sure to use gentle products, such as those that are alcohol free. Avoid using products that irritate your skin, such as toners and exfoliants, as this can lead to dry and red skin, which can make your acne appear worse.

  3. Shampoo regularly. If you have oily hair, make sure to shampoo regularly.

  4. Avoid picking or squeezing your acne. If you have acne, try to let your skin heal naturally. If you pick or squeeze your acne, your skin will take longer to clear and you’ll also increase your risk of developing acne scars.

  5. Don’t touch your face. Touching your skin throughout the day will increase the number of flare ups you might have.

  6. Avoid scrubbing your skin. Avoid the temptation to scrub your skin, as this can make your acne worse. Also, make sure to rinse with lukewarm water.

Acne Treatment: When Is The Right Time to Consult a Skin Specialist?

Do you suffer from acne? Is this skin condition affecting your self-esteem and quality of life? You should consult a dermatologist if:

  • The skin care products you have tried aren’t working.
  • Your acne makes you shy, embarrassed, or severely self-conscious.
  • Your acne is leaving scars or darkening your skin.

With the advancements in acne treatments, virtually every case of acne can be successfully treated. Skin care specialists have the training and experience to:

  • Treat existing acne
  • Prevent new breakouts
  • Reduce your chance of developing scars

If you have any questions about caring for you skin, then you should consult your skin specialist straight away.
