Microneedling And Stretch Marks
What Are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks are a type of scar that can occur when the skin stretches or shrinks within a short period of time. Stretch marks are very common among all people and they tend to occur during puberty as bodies quickly change, during periods of weight fluctuation, during pregnancy, or during periods of rapid muscle growth. As the skin shrinks or expands, it ruptures the supportive structures within the skin, namely collagen and elastin. As these fibres heal, stretch marks are formed. Older stretch marks tend to be a lighter colour, often similar to white or silver depending on skin tone, whereas new stretch marks that have developed within the year tend to be a deeper colour, as they have few layers of the epidermis covering them, which makes blood vessels easier to see. Stretch marks also tend to be textured, either as indents or as raised scars.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment designed to reduce the appearance of scars, pores, fine lines, and more. Microneedling works by creating controlled micro injuries to the treatment area. These micro injuries are not harmful to the person receiving the treatment, but they do signal to the body that it needs to repair the area. In order to repair the area, the body creates collagen and elastin in the damaged area.
How Does Microneedling Work To Minimize Stretch Marks?
Since stretch marks are caused by damaged elastin and collagen, the increased collagen and elastin produced from microneedling treatment helps to repair stretch marks and minimize their visibility. This treatment works best on new stretch marks that have only developed in the last year, as these are often still healing and microneedling can help create long-lasting results. For older stretch marks, microneedling can temporarily reduce the appearance of these scars since the collagen and elastin produced during treatment helps to plump the skin of the treated area, which can help to hide indented scarring. Microneedling works well on stretch marks compared to other topical treatments because microneedling penetrates deeper into the skin where the scar tissue actually develops. Surface-level treatment doesn’t get deep enough into the skin to truly impact the source of the stretch marks.

FAQ
Q: Does microneedling get rid of stretch marks?
A: No, microneedling can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks either temporarily or permanently and microneedling can aid in stretch mark healing, but it does not get rid of them.
Q: Is microneedling only used to address stretch marks?
A: No, microneedling is used as a treatment for a variety of cosmetic concerns including wrinkles and fine lines, acne scarring, uneven skin tone, and more. Learn about the other benefits of microneedling by reading How Microneedling Improves Your Skin.
Q: Can I use at-home microneedling?
A: While there are at-home microneedling or microrolling kits available, these are not recommended. These at-home options do not penetrate as far into the skin as treatments available from professional skin care centres and therefore won’t address issues such as scarring or wrinkles. Beyond this, using at-home kits lead to a greater risk of infection.
