An innovative skin renewal treatment, dermaplaning is a form of manual exfoliation similar to microdermabrasion, but without the use of suction or abrasive crystals. Instead, an aesthetician-grade blade is used to ‘shave off’ dead skin cells from the epidermis.
This will lead to:
- A reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
- More radiant, youthful, and smooth skin
- A more even complexion
- A reduced appearance of acne scars
- An improvement in sun-damaged skin

What Happens During a Dermaplaning Procedure?
When performed by an experienced esthetician, a dermaplaning procedure is a safe and effective way to instantly rejuvenate your skin. If you’ve never had a dermaplaning procedure before, here’s what you can expect:
Step 1: You will have a pre-treatment consultation with your skin specialist. During this appointment, they will determine if this is the right treatment for you.
Step 2: On the day of your treatment, you’ll lie down on your provider’s chair in a clean and comfortable room. Often, sedation is available and this can range from a numbing spray to local anesthesia, combined with an oral sedative. This is to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure.
Step 3: Once you are relaxed, your provider will use a dermaplaning tool to scrape over your skin at a 45-degree angle and gently exfoliate the treatment area. This will take approximately 20-30 minutes
Step 4: Once the procedure is completed, your provider will soothe your skin with a gel such as aloe. They may also apply sunscreen to protect your skin.
Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?
One of the biggest advantages of dermaplaning is that it is a low-risk procedure. Some side effects may include slight redness in the treatment area or whiteheads in a day or two following the treatment.
Infections and Scarring
These are extremely rare after a dermaplaning procedure, but sometimes they do occur. If you do develop a scar from dermaplaning, you should visit your skin specialist as soon as possible.
Smoother and Brighter Skin: What to Expect From Your Dermaplaning Procedure
Many patients notice that their skin looks noticeably brighter after a dermaplaning treatment. However, it can take a few days for the full results to be visible, especially once the redness has subsided.
Be Careful of Sun Exposure
Once you’ve undergone a dermaplaning procedure, you must be careful about sun exposure. Sun damage could reverse the effects of dermaplaning, or create pigment blotches. Try to avoid the sun for a few days following the treatment but after that, ensure you always wear sunscreen while outside.
Are the results permanent?
The results of dermaplaning are effective, but not permanent. You’ll be able to enjoy clear skin for 3-4 weeks, after which repeat treatments will be required.
