Juvederm vs Radiesse: What’s The Difference?

Juvederm and Radiesse are two very popular dermal fillers which have the ability to completely rejuvenate your skin by smoothing out lines and wrinkles. They are both:

  • Non-surgical
  • Minimally painful
  • Quick and fast and require no downtime
  • Used to correct similar facial aging symptoms

However, there are a few key differences between these two dermal fillers that all prospective patients should know about.

Formulas

Juvederm has a gel-based formula that has hyaluronic acid (HA) as its active ingredient. HA has the power to attract and retain up to 1000 times its weight in water, a characteristic that makes Juvederm work so well.

How? Once injected into the skin, the Juvederm filler draws moisture into the treatment area, plumping up the skin to eradicate wrinkles.

Radiesse is a filler that combines a gel with tiny calcium microspheres called calcium hydroxylapatite. Both elements work to plump the skin by stimulating the production of new collagen. When injected, the gel component creates a temporary fill, that can last up to six months. The calcium particles left behind create a scaffold for your tissue to build around, creating a longer-term fill.

Treatment Areas

Both dermal fillers can be used to treat aging symptoms of the same facial areas, including:

  • Cheeks
  • Jawline
  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial folds

The Juvederm family includes Juvederm Volume (to enhance cheek volume), Juvederm Volbella (to target lip lines and other fine lines around the mouth) and Juvederm Vollure (to treat folds and wrinkles).

Results: What to Expect

Both Radiesse and Juvederm provide dramatic results, making the skin appear more youthful. Juvederm is very effective at addressing finer lines and deep wrinkles, while Radiesse can correct deeper (and more severe) lines and folds.

How Long Do They Last?

All dermal fillers provide temporary results. Eventually, the filler will degrade and return the treatment area to its pretreatment state. How long the filler lasts depends on its formulation, as well as other variables, including a patient’s metabolism.

Radiesse typically lasts longer than Juvederm due to its ability to increase collagen production within the skin. Radiesse can last between 18-24 months, while Juvederm results last for up to one year.

Treatment Time

Both Radiesse and Juvederm treatments can be performed very quickly, with most procedures performed within 30-45 minutes, depending on the location and size of the treatment area. They also require no downtime, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after your treatment.
