Should I Use Anti-Aging Products In My 20s?

Are you seeing signs of ageing in your 20s, or just planning on starting a preventive regimen? Either way, our latest blog tells you everything you need to know about anti-ageing treatments.

It seems that no one is immune to the desire to keep youthful, healthy skin. In fact, when she was aged just 20, Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson stated in an interview, “I already use anti-ageing products on my skin.”

At Okanagan Skin Care Centre, we know that it’s always better to take preventive measures, and we know that some women may begin to see signs of ageing before others.

However, we believe more than anything in a tailored approach to skincare, which is why we say DO start anti-ageing prevention early, but DON’T simply selects treatments that are designed for women in their 40’s and 50’s.

Here are a few answers to commonly-asked questions about starting an anti-ageing treatment in your 20s, along with our Kelowna skincare specialists' advice on getting rejuvenation right.

How Do I Know If I Need To Fight Signs Of Ageing In My 20s?

Everyone is different. Some women may begin to notice the beginnings of uneven pigmentation in their 20s, while others may not.

You may be one of those who needs a stronger anti-ageing routine in your 20s if:

  • you smoke
  • you grew up spending a lot of time outdoors
  • you use tanning beds
  • you have strong facial muscles and dramatic facial expressions

You may need anti-ageing treatments in your 20s if:

  • you notice fine lines
  • you notice uneven pigmentation that won’t fade
  • you are experiencing melasma after the birth of a child or due to hormonal birth control

Should I Use Anti-Aging Creams In My 20s?

Many creams formulated for anti-ageing were designed with older skin in mind. Women who are older often have normal-to-dry skin, which means that products often combine active ingredients in combination with a heavy dose of hydration.  While this may be fine if you have dry skin, those with medium-to-oily skin might find that it causes breakouts or a skin texture that is shiny rather than dewy.

If you have acne scars or pigmentation issues, your Kelowna skincare professional can help you select the right cream. They may also suggest alternate methods of skin resurfacing, like dermabrasion or a chemical peel. While some may require ongoing treatments, in some cases one course of treatment followed up with good preventative measures may be enough to solve the problem.

Should I Use Retinoids In My 20s?

Vitamin C and retinoid creams function by helping the skin shed its upper layer and regenerate more quickly. These creams are highly effective when used as prescribed. However, they can also make the skin more susceptible to sun damage, which is why dermatologists always recommend sunscreen alongside these products.

If you are simply seeking a preventive regimen, vitamin C and retinol creams might not be needed, and could even be increasing your skin’s risk for sun damage.

What Can I Do In My 20s To Stay Youthful

For most individuals in their 20s, the right preventative measures, alongside targeted treatments designed to address any early signs of ageing, are the right way forward.

Everyone should use:

  • a good sunscreen formulated for the face
  • an antioxidant-rich hydrating serum

You can enhance your skin by making lifestyle choices such as:

  • avoiding cigarettes
  • avoiding excessive alcohol consumption
  • getting hours sleep a night
  • eating a healthy, balanced diet
